Discussion/Debate with Patrick Casey on Race, Ethnicity and Religion
Patrick Casey and I got into a disagreement on Twitter over this notion of "white" and its salience. He suggested I come onto his podcast to discuss the issue.
What should we think about the category of “white”? I am of the mind that while it is not completely without content, it is the highest level of abstraction in which to group those people, likely of European descent, with light skin. My argument in a recent Twitter thread was that if this is the primary way that you think of yourself in terms of your own identity, that is pretty, thin, lacking substance. You are a mass man, largely deracinated, cut off from more grounded, thicker forms of self-understanding. It makes you vulnerable to propaganda manipulation by both enemy and so-called friends. Patrick disagreed. And after our Twitter exchange, he reached out to say that perhaps we were talking past each other. He invited me onto his show for a discussion to debate and hash out the subject. A friend whose opinion I value said we were still managed to talk past each other in the discussion. Over all I think it was productive, I think. Listen and see if you agree.
