I’m reading a bio of t Jefferson and one of the outlooks of the enlightenment that he embraced was its universality and rationality. Just thinking out loud but I wonder if the rights of man and self evident truths were not another way of talking about a technical approach to the management of man as a whole, not just Northern European

I think the Industrial Revolution was just starting and tj didn’t want industry in the us or at least Virginia, but the enlightenment sounds like elluls description of technique. Tj saw himself and man as a whole as rational enough to govern himself without religion, so the rational part of elluls def is in tj

Dare I even admit what I am thinking?

I perceive the first glimmer of deliverance. I will follow the signs that lead in that direction.

Do you reproach me as one who has understood nothing of the vastness of the situation?

Are not all things possible with God?

At the very least, may I offer this - I cannot help but keep this hope at this time, because it is the last item contained within Pandora's box.
