Recent Podcast Appearances
It has been a busy podcast week for me. Here are links to my recent appearances.
Normal posting is going to pick up in the near future. My actual business, the thing I do to pay the bills, can be kind of seasonal and lumpy in terms of busy periods. I did nine months of business in two and half months to start the year. But it looks like things will be quieting down, which means more head space and time to focus on posting. I have been a little burned out and actually spent a day last week binge watching “The Gentleman” on Netflix in the middle of the week. I recommend the eight episodes of the first season, but not in front of the kids.
I do have at least three pieces planned out, maybe four. And then I should be ready to start diving into writing on Walter Ong’s “Fighting for Life: Conflict, Sexuality and Consciousness,” which examines in depth the nature of what it means to be male and why men today struggle to become men. You may have seen some of the Tweets and Substack Notes I have been posting as teasers. After that we will be returning to Ellul. I am thinking of doing a deep look into his book about propaganda. I also want to tackle Augusto del Noce’s book on Atheism where he fleshes out “ontologism” as a concept.
The J. Burden Show
J. Burden had me on to talk about the nature of the culture war and the importance of understanding the difference between a first and second order disagreement and why this matters in our current political landscape.
Chronicles Magazine
C. Jay Engel invited me on to discuss the writings of Jacques Ellul, introducing him to the Chronicles readership/audience. C. Jay asked a lot of good questions and it brought together a number of threads from Ellul.
Last Things
I was invited onto the Last Things YouTube channel and we did a live stream on Friday evening. This one was different because he had me talk about Calvinism of all things. He wanted to understand the essential teachings of this tradition and so it ended up being an extended discourse on predestination among other key Calvinist teachings like the Kingship of Christ. We also dive into the whole “re-enchantment” discussion. We conclude with my thoughts on picking a worshiping community for someone new or newly returning to the Christian faith.
2 Bit Podcast
This one was from a while back and in my busyness I forgot to post it here. The guys had me on to talk about giants and why there really is no true conservativism in the North American context.
I found your older video fascinating. You brought up the switch in global perceptions of God post year 1K.
The Holy Spirit came to me in a church. The church itself I left in 2020, after becoming disillusioned, but the Spirit heard me THERE.
We have so much to learn.
